Virginia Marie Long

VIRGINIA MARIE LONG Virginia Marie Long went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, March 25, 2008. She was born in Wynnewood, Oklahoma, January 1, 1915 to William O. Martin and Mary Etta Braden Martin. She was married to William Gilmer Long, Jr. for 51 years before he preceded her in death in 1986. She was, also, preceded in death by her parents, her brother, William (Bill) O. Martin, Jr. and grandson William Gilmer Long, IV. Virginia is survived by her sons, William Gilmer Long, III and his wife Genevieve, Lonny Gene Long, her brother Bobby (Bob) Jim Martin and wife Christine, and sister-in-law, Johnnie Martin. She was blessed with five granddaughters, Tina Poenisch and husband Darryl, Athenea Ponce and husband Michael, Aurora Long, Crystal Long, and Jeannie Long, and great-granddaughter, Makayla Ponce. Also, nephews, Mike Martin and wife Jan, David Martin and wife Kody, and nieces, Carol Burnett and husband Bill, Susan Neuhleisen and husband Dick, and Patricia Valentine and husband Bryan. And several grandnephews and grandnieces. Virginia graduated from Pauls Valley High School in 1931. She holds a BS Degree in Journalism from OU and Master Degree in Counseling from NorthWestern University. Her life was involved in education. Her first teaching job was at Liberty, then Elmore City, Whitebead and then Pauls Valley High School, a total of 38 years in the field of teaching. At PVHS she taught journalism and was responsible for the PVHS yearbooks. The Pauls Valley Alumni Association honored her as “Teacher of the Year 2006”. She was very active as a 4-H leader at Whitebead and Elmore City and they won numerous awards. She was active in Weslyan Service Guild, United Methodist Women, taught Sunday School and served on several committees at the First United Methodist Church. She was involved with Retired Teachers Association. She loved to travel and visited the Gulf Coast and west Coast on numerous fishing trips. She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church. Services will be held Thursday, March 27, at 2:00 p.m. at the Wooster Funeral Home Chapel.
