Virginia Florene Selby

Virginia Florene Selby, a devoted Christian, beloved caregiver, and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2025 at the age of 97. Born on July 8, 1927, to Charles R. Selby and Mozell (Douthit) Selby, Florene lived a life rooted in faith, service, and love. Her early years shaped the woman she became—compassionate, diligent, and always willing to lend a hand. Florene dedicated her career to caring for others in many capacities. She worked at the John A. Brown Department Store before serving as a Nutrition Assistant and later as Secretary for the Oklahoma Dietary Manager Association. Her greatest professional joy, however, came from running her own in-home daycare, where she lovingly cared for and nurtured countless children. Her daycare was not just a place of care, but a home filled with love, laughter, and learning. A devoted member of The Church of Christ, Virginia lived out her faith daily, teaching others about Christianity not only through words but through her gentle actions and strong example. Her spiritual commitment was a cornerstone of her life and touched everyone she encountered. Virginia enjoyed many hobbies throughout her life. She had a special talent for sewing and was known for the care and detail she put into her creations. In her later years, she found joy in the simple pleasures of playing bingo with friends at her retirement community. Among the highlights of her life were the time she spent sewing and the many years she operated her in-home daycare—both expressions of her creativity, nurturing spirit, and devotion to others. She will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her gentle and giving nature, and the love she shared so freely with family, friends, and the many children whose lives she helped shape. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Charles R. Selby and Mozell (Douthit) Selby; Brother, Charles Selby Jr., Gail Selby; Sisters, Gloria Henderson and husband Earl, Neva Shelton and husband Jim; Brothers-in-law, Loyd Turner and Billy James. Virginia is survived by her Sister, Peggy James; Sister-in-law, Fern Selby; Nieces and Nephews, Earl R. Henderson, Sally Boothe, Priscilla Morris, Charles Selby, Jimmy Shelton Jr., Johnna Sweet, Mike Turner, Tracy Tapscott, and a host of other family and friends. Graveside services for Virginia will be on Saturday, July 12, 2025 at 10:00 A.M. at the Elmore City Cemetery in Elmore City, Oklahoma with pastor Joe Terrell officiating.
