Joan Hunter

Mary Joan Hunter, 84, passed away peacefully February28th, surrounded by her sons in Raleigh, NC. She was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to William Milburn and Mary Vivian Magness Hensley. She graduated from Sulphur, Oklahoma High School, where she was homecoming queen and a cheerleader. She married Ruben Elbert Hunter of Sulphur. They had 3 sons, Ronald Kent, Donald Brent, and Randal Keith. After many years raising her sons, she attended East Central State University in Ada, Oklahoma, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree and later a Masters of Education from the University of Oklahoma. She began teaching music in the 1969-70 school year in Healdton, Oklahoma. She also taught at Ada High School, Lindsay High School and Whitebead Elementary School. Her love for music inspired many students and provided various travel opportunities nationally and internationally. Joan loved the Lord and held weekly Bible studies in her Pauls Valley home and at her ranch in the Foster community. She was indeed a prayer warrior with heartfelt conviction, asking for God’s help in the lives of her friends and family. Joan was friendly and outgoing and was said to have never met a stranger. She touched many lives through her gifts of a giving heart, musical talent, encouraging words and, most of all, her love for God. While living in the Foster community, she was instrumental in forming the Doyle Volunteer Fire Department and played a key role in bringing accessible water to the area. She is survived by her sons, Ronald and wife, Kathryn of Dandridge, TN, Donald and wife Cindy of Angier, NC and Randal and wife Carla, of Oklahoma City, OK 7 grandsons , 1 granddaughter, and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her brother, William JosephHensley. A celebration of her life will be held Friday, March 9th, 10:00 at Erin Springs Baptist Church located just south of Lindsay on Hwy.76. Burial will follow at Woodland Memorial Park in Sand Springs, Oklahoma.
