Shirley Evelyn McManus

April 20, 1932 - August 25, 2020

Shirley Evelyn Hancock McManus was born April 20, 1931 to Jess and Velma Hancock. She grew up in the Whitebead community and graduated from Pauls Valley High School. Shirley met and married Billy Gene McManus in November 1949. After Bill’s military service, they made their home in Pauls Valley. She was a homemaker and stay at home mom for several years before starting work outside the home. Shirley began her working career as an employee at the J. C. Penny store in Pauls Valley. She enjoyed various secretarial jobs through the years. She was working as the secretary for the Pauls Valley Chamber of Commerce when she retired in 2001. She was active in the First United Methodist Church of Pauls Valley as well as the Crusaders Sunday School class. She and Bill were founding members of the annual Ground Hog Breakfast. Shirley helped with the Methodist Youth Fellowship and was on of the communion stewards for over 25 years. Shirley was an avid gardener whose flower beds were exceptionally beautiful with an array of colors. Shirley (Grandma Mac) enjoyed swinging her four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren on the rope swing in her back yard. She loved putting puzzles together with the grandchildren, sewing doll clothes for the girls, crocheting baby blankets and afghans, and helping Bill with stained glass projects. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Jess and Velma Hancock, one brother, Jackie Hancock, husband of 64 years, Bill McManus, and son Gary McManus. She is survived by two sisters, Carol Arterberry and Gary of Pauls Valley, Sandra Henning and Tommy of Slaughterville, one son, Larry McManus and Debbie of Pauls Valley. Also, four grandchildren, Courtney Green and husband Heath Green, Jared McManus and wife Melissa of Jacksonville, NC, Felisha McManus of McPherson, Kansas, Jonathan McManus of Denver, CO. In addition, she leaves behind eight great-grandchildren Jackson, Parker, and Victoria Green of Pauls Valley; Ryan and Kaylie McManus of Jacksonville, NC; and Nadia and Naomi Vesser, and Noah Sowers of McPherson, Kansas. The family would like to thank Cheryl and Mary Beth of Canoe Brook Assisted Living Center in Ardmore for their care and guidance during her stay there. We would especially life to thank the caregivers who attended to her needs with love and compassion. Also, to the residents who extended friendship and love. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 1, 2020 at the First United Methodist Church in Pauls Valley with Rev Diana Pruitt officiating. All attendees are asked to wear masks and observe social distancing. Thank you for your kindness and cooperation in following these guidelines.
